Shrines

Shrines grew out of my time in Japan, where I was deeply moved by the Shinto reverence for nature. The stones, leaves, and seed pods I gather become small altars honoring the quiet beauty of earth’s extraordinary gifts.

This 7 foot sculpture functions as a reliquary and a shrine. The curving gash down the middle suggests a river or a jagged tear following an earthquake. The rocks, collected from all over the world, are carefully perched on tiny shelves suggesting both stability/instability, permanence /impermanence.
